Releases we listened to last week
Luther Dickinson and Sisters of the Strawberry Moon — Solstice, 2019
Luther Dickinson with the Sisters of Strawberry Moon recorded an album of root music of their native Mississipi with the sacred name of Solstice. Country, blues and folk were combined in their music that we’d rather call an Americana. Well, perhaps there’s too much folk for our refined taste.
Vicious Mistress Records — Psycho In The Street Vol. 3, 2019
A punk label Vicious Mistress released the third part of compilation Psycho In The Street. Sixteen songs of the «young generation» of the Psychobilly scene including the Troubled from Kyiv. Good news is that the psycho butter becomes better, bad news is there’s way too much rock in the psycho made by youngsters.
BOOM! BOOM! DELUXE — TeenageJuvenileDelinquentRocknRollHorrorBeachParty!, 2019
A new album of Boom! Boom! Deluxe with the synthetic name TeenageJuvenileDelinquentRocknRollHorrorBeach Party is a great contribution to rock’n’roll and the holy 50s’ theme. It’s rhythmic and danceable, with the «fat» signature sound of late 50s — early 60s. It’s like an alchemic marriage of rockabilly and swing for either greaser or bopper, and any dead, living and unborn.
Mo7s— Big Deal, 2019
Now, there were two possessions of the David Lewises in which they both took a mighty pride. One was Dave's guitar skill, elegantly careless like grandfathers used to play. The other was Amy's voice. Had the queen of Sheba lived in the flat across the airshaft, Amy would have sang aloud near the window some day just to depreciate Her Majesty. Had King Solomon wanted to play rockabilly and alt-country, with all his treasures piled up in the basement, I would play a new album by Mo7s every time he passed, just to see him pluck at his beard from envy.
The Hawkmen— The Hawkmen, 2019
One of the Gus Marson’s projects (the guitarist of Surf Rats) — a British band The Hawkmen is a «mix of the old rhythm-and-blues, rockabilly and northern soul». A very confident debute — solid, down-to-earth, quality and billy to the bone.
